VOLUNTEERS OF ALL FAITHS CHANGING LIVES
Family Promise’s shelter program relies on a partnership of interfaith congregations, local businesses and organizations and other volunteer groups to help local families facing homelessness. Our host sites provide lodging, meals and hospitality to families in need. For families in the program, each day begins with a ride to the Day Center from the host site for breakfast (groceries provided by the host) and to prepare for their day's activities. At the Day Center children catch buses to school and parents that have jobs are off to work. During time off parents, with the guidance of Family Promise staff, are working on all aspects of their lives to find a way out of homelessness. In the evening, guests return to the host site, where volunteers provide dinner and spend some quality time. The evening hours are for homework, relaxing and family fun time, as they would be with any family. Each day ends with the family all together, under one roof.
HOST SITES
Local organizations provide temporary overnight lodging in otherwise unused spaces in their buildings. A host organization team of volunteers may be involved with the following:
-
Cooking and hosting dinner
-
Spending the evening with families, talking, tutoring kids or playing games
-
Sleeping overnight at the host site
-
Coordinating children’s crafts & activities
-
Donating necessary supplies for the hosting week
-
Driving the cots from one host to the next
-
Setting up and breaking down guest families’ rooms
SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS
Local organizations provide support to a host site for any of the above volunteer tasks during a host's site week. Some of our support organizations act as a host in one of our other host sites. They want to fulfill the needs of a host site but do not have the space to have overnight guests.
